This review does not take any considerations of any previous Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo material, and the series will be treated just by itself –
Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo Returns is, of course, a sequel to Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo, which was a long-running series (148 episodes) in the 90s that have also inspired, movies, OVAs and a live action series. You don’t need to watch the previous series watch this one.
This series is for a very specific audience, those who enjoys mysteries with detectives such Sherlock Holmes, Miss Maple or Poroit, so if you don’t like those kinds of shows then you shouldn’t waste your time to watch this. On the other hand, if you like those type of shows then you are in for a treat.
This series is quite episodic, with a few episodes dedicated to a particular case and there is a clear antagonist in the form of Yoichi Takato-“The Puppeteer From Hell”, but there is not much progression with this character. The episodes follow a very simple format in that someone will be murdered or something is stolen, Kindaichi will have to use his deductive skills to solve the case. Standard crime fiction.
The series does create some very interesting cases, and provide the viewers with all the clues to solve some of the cases like Kindaichi and Akechi. Other times there are things that the show doesn’t tell you before Kindaichi solves it, which makes it impossible to solve the case.
If you like crime fiction, aka, mystery with detective stuff, by all means, give Kindaichi a chance.
